As I package the calendars and prepare to share them with you, I thought it would be fun to give the inside scoop as to how the Lord led me in choosing this coming year’s theme/design, “the words of Jesus | a beautiful pattern to live by”.

First, may “the words of Jesus” be our guide in the coming year. As I was brainstorming and praying about the theme/design for the 2021 scripture calendar, I realized that I’ll be turning thirty years old towards the end of 2020. The big 3-0, the same age Jesus was when He began His public ministry! My heart was bursting with joy as I thought about the new calendar being full of some of the wise and life-giving teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ! I pray that the verses selected for the 2021 calendar will spur us on to dive deeper into the gospels while we “hangout with Jesus” and renew our minds in those books of the Bible.

Secondly, over the past several months. I’ve noticed that I’ve been increasingly inspired by and drawn to visual/artistic patterns. From being in awe of beautifully patterned floors, fabrics, and wallpapers to experimenting with fun patterns and designs while doodling or playing blocks/legos with my little Z’s, or marveling at God-made patterns like the design on a turtle’s shell or a butterfly’s wings, patterns have just been sparking extra joy in my soul these days! So it makes sense that as I worked on organizing the “the words of Jesus” part of the theme/design for the calendar and wondered how it would translate visually, the Lord kept bringing the word “pattern” to my mind. I was doin’ my yay-yay-yay dance in my art nook like, “Great idea, Jesus! Patterns! Each month will have a special background pattern, to remind us that by Your grace and power, we should pattern our lives according to Your Word and keep in step with the Spirit! Thanks for the idea!”

So there you have it: Jesus’ words and pretty patterns! As we focus on the words of Jesus in the coming year and soak up the scriptures/patterns month after month, may we delight in the pattern and example that Jesus set for us. Paul writes in Romans chapter 12 verse 2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” I pray that we will live this out in the coming year and that these little calendars will help us draw near to Christ in 2021.
